This artwork captures the vibrant essence of New York City through a tender portrayal of a pigeon and a dove embracing in a gentle hug. Their embrace symbolizes unity and connection. The overall color palette is warm and inviting, with splashes of vibrant colors that evoke a sense of joy and celebration. Pigeon and Dove is part of Luba Kholov’s Birds of New York City series.

The story behind the artwork:

One day, while dropping my son off at school, I met a teacher who told me she had been watching a pair of birds from her classroom window for several years. I assumed she meant a pigeon and a dove — the very two birds I was filming at that moment.

It felt unusual, so I looked into it and discovered that such mixed pairs do exist in nature, although very rarely. I felt inspired to paint them. A few days after I finished the artwork, I ran into the teacher again, and during our conversation, I realized she had actually meant a pair of doves, not a pigeon and a dove.

Of course, I was a little upset… but then I realized it didn’t really matter. Creativity can imagine, bend the rules, and be beautifully illogical. Let this artwork stand as a symbol of mixed marriages—so common in New York City. My husband and I are one of them.

It can also be read as a metaphor for how two people in a couple can be completely different individuals, yet still deeply connected. Love and tenderness bring us closer.

I never saw that teacher again…
